On the Quest for Black Pudding

Today we went to Wollombi Market where there was a stall selling things like jerky and kangaroo pepperoni (very tasty!)  They had a sign up saying they sold Northern English style black pudding.  I asked the stallholder if it contained pork and was assured no, it was proper Northern English style.  I carried a pudding home full of promise and anticipation.

As soon as I got home I set the frying pans out on the stove and sliced the end off.  I immediately thought no,  that looks wrong.  I grabbed my glasses and read the ingredients – 66% pork. Damn – failed again.  Teach me to go out without my reading glasses.

Rant follows:

I don’t know where the Australians get the idea from that black pudding contains pork meat.  I’ve never come across pork sausage with a little blood anywhere in the British Isles or indeed Northern France. Here you don’t seem to be able to get anything else.  What happened to the Poms’ tastebuds when they crossed the line?  How could they forget so thoroughly?

  1. As gross as I think it is, my Mum loves black pudding (she is the daughter of a Pom) I shall have to ask her if the stuff she used to eat was Pork based or not.
